I write this at the end of Pride month, but it will run on July 1.
For years I have cited a statistic that science has found 464 other species besides humans who practice homosexuality. That number has now blossomed to over 1500 observed species.
Why is this important? Because for many centuries the argument against the diversity of gender preference has been that it is “unnatural.” For heterosexuals, who are surely the dominant group of humans, homosexuality seems “unnatural;” but for homosexuals or bisexuals, that is not the case. When we find other species where gays and lesbians practice same-sex attraction, then that tells us something additional about the diversity of gender preference in nature as a whole.
And all this tells us something about God as well, for as Thomas Aquinas alerted us in the 13th century, “a mistake about creation results in a mistake about God.” Thus we need to consult science before we pronounce on many topics of ethics and morality. Ignorance about nature results in ignorance about God, and can create havoc in our churches and theologies.
Many Christians and Christian institutions have told us that, in effect, God is homophobic and does not tolerate sexual diversity. But that would seem not to be the case at all, as we study human populations where about 8% of people are gay or lesbian all around the world. Furthermore, as Seneca woman and Franciscan Sister Jose Hobday told me years ago, most spiritual directors to the great chiefs in America were gay or “two-spirited,” and it is recognized among her people that gays are more spiritual than straight people. This is true in Celtic and many other traditions as well.
A recent study about animal same-sex-behavior concludes that the entire topic is underreported.* Common bottlenose dolphins, giraffes, African elephants, penguins, beetles, lesbian sea gulls, swans, and numerous other species display gay sex.
Josh L. Davis, in his book, A Little Queer Natural History, published by University of Chicago Press, demonstrates how “sex in the natural world is wonderfully diverse,” and includes split gill mushrooms with over 23,000 mating types. “The diversity we see in our own species needs no justification and represents just a fraction of what exists in the natural world.”
Those who pontificate from a place of homophobia, be they popes or politicians passing homophobic legislation, ought to operate from a place of modesty and humility in the face of Creation’s vast diversity.

What follows vis-à-vis homophobia in society—including the effort to pass over 400 anti-LGBTQ bills by politicians this past year—when the news of nature’s sexual diversity is unveiled?

Beautiful teachings in the 2 videos today, thank you Matthew.
For starters, the government has to stay our of our bedrooms. The Catholic church has many gay priests, whether celibate or not, so they need to be accepting for starters as well. A vow of marriage is just as valid whether considered sacramentally blessed or not. — BB.
Beautiful meditation Matthew on the importance of realizing/being aware of the Divine Flow of Loving Healing DIverse WHOLENESS~ONENESS in our inner and outer daily lives with Others in the Sacred Process of the ETERNAL PRESENT MOMENT…
The second half of yesterday’s quote from Ilia Delio’s book, “The Not-Yet God,” about Divine Love: “… Love changes the impersonal fields of information into personal, subjective moments of care and concern (compassion – D.M.). It is the inexplicable core energy that gives one identity and deep purpose. We do not train our minds to attain that which is impersonal; we train our minds to attain that which is most deeply personal, for only personal love can make us whole. The ultimate object of love can only be a personal God. Divine love is an inexhaustible energy deep within the field of our infinite potential of Self. When we listen to the depth of our hearts, we awaken our soul’s desire, break through our fears, and embrace the adventure of life. Love transforms because love unites. Love pierces through the veil of divine mystery and enters into personal union with the ground of life. What begins in this life endures for all eternity for God’s love is an everlasting love (Jer 31:3).
A valuable resource on the diversity not only in other animals but also among humans is the special National Geographic issue on Gender from January 2017. Our queer community is assailed and attacked from many sources, and the tragedy for young people especially is that they internalize the shame which rightfully belongs to those who attack them–this is the dynamic of trauma. To counter this evil trend, we can speak up both to those who make jokes or otherwise malign this group and to our political “representatives”–even though it seems hopeless. We can do something as simple as wearing a Pride item, to show our solidarity with them and against injustice. Here in Florida, the repression grows. A trans teacher picked a particular school a few years ago because it was welcoming. However, the law now forbids her from using her pronoun, and she is forced to write “Teacher Smith” on the board instead of “Miss Smith”. Another teacher was fired for ignoring this. The pettiness of this kind of oppression is staggering. And this is just one example.
The zealots who want to return “morality” to our country, and think the way to do it is to post the 10 Commandments in every classroom? They haven’t said as much (yet), but I’ll bet what they’re really trying to do, is ensure that NO kid ever turns out to be gay, lesbian, or trans. That, to them, is what “morality” looks like — when there are other plenty of other crimes against humanity that are far more immoral than that.
