In two recent DM’s, we meditated on the meaning of Notre Dame’s reopening and before that on Trump’s election on November 5th. It seems I was not alone in so doing.
Satirist Andy Borowitz has offered his view on things with this very timely post in his The Borowitz Report entitled “Reopening of Notre-Dame Marred by Appearance of Antichrist” (see linked image at right). He tells us that the much-anticipated reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral on Saturday was ruined by the appearance of the Antichrist, observers said.
Beelzebub, who had travelled from Palm Beach, was heard loudly complaining that he had come “all the way to Notre Dame and there was no football game.”
He later disrupted the ceremony by loudly hawking a shipment of $60 Bibles he had just received from China.
French president Emmanuel Macron apologized to the world for inviting the Archfiend but added, “At least he didn’t bring Elon.”*
Or $500 shoes for sale, I would add.
In response, I submitted this letter of appreciation to Mr. Borowitz.
Dear Mr. Borowitz:
Thank you for your fine treatment of the antichrist at Notre Dame. Though you are a satirist and I am a spiritual theologian, we are on the same page.
See my recent book, Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election, where I connect him to paintings of the antichrist from St. Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century and Luca Signorelli from the early 16th century as well as the reformers of the 16th century.
You have done a fine job bringing this archetype up to date. You can also feast on this from Thom Hartmann (above).
Best,
Matthew Fox

Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election
Matthew Fox tells us that he had always shied away from using the term “Anti-Christ” because it was so often used to spread control and fear. However, given today’s rise of authoritarianism and forces of democracide, ecocide, and christofascism, he turns the tables in this book employing the archetype for the cause of justice, democracy, and a renewed Earth and humanity.
From the Foreword: If there was ever a time, a moment, for examining the archetype of the Antichrist, it is now…Read this book with an open mind. Good and evil are real forces in our world. ~~ Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Conversations with the Divine.

Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society
Visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them.
“A scholarly masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science. A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics

I love the comment. In the midst of recognizing the bottomless depravity of the man and his minions, it is well and absolutely necessary to keep a sense of humor. A belly laugh is very healing. Humor gives me pause to release tension, regain a sense of perspective, and to renew my strength for the long haul of resisting injustice.
Matthew, I greatly respect you for numerous reasons but your endless attributing Donald Trump as the antichrist is misplaced in my view. Yes, he has many loathesome characteristics but I am sure that the Syrian people, including the millions who have been displaced together with the hundreds of thousands who have been killed at the hands of Bashar al-Assad, would have exchanged him for Donald Trump in a heartbeat. To the best of our knowledge, the US president-elect does not have blood on his hands. The same cannot be said of Vladimir Putin who has instructed the killing of several of those who dared oppose him. More importantly, I believe it trivializes something of the most profoundly important occult nature, far beyond its true biblical meaning and connotations.
Paul,
I invite you to read Matthew’s book. In it he invokes the ‘Archetype’ of the Anti Christ in the person of Trump and in the whole MAGA movement and brings in Freud, Jung, Hildegarde of Bingen and the fresco of Signorelli in Orvieto to support his invocation. Andrew Harvey commented that only a theologian of Fox’s caliber would have the authority and courage to name what is the obvious.
In our very troubled world the face of Trump superimposed on the Antichrist could be replaced by many other world leaders who value power and money above truth, justice and people’s lives. Trumps actions in overturning Roe vs Wade most certainly places blood on his hands!! Again I invite you to Read the Book!
Thank you Ellen for your reply. However, I don’t follow your reasoning with regard to Trump’s actions in overturning Roe vs Wade and how that places blood on his hands. He nominated justices for the Supreme Court, as is the president’s responsibility when a seat becomes vacant. The candidate is then approved by the Senate. Like it or not, it is a democratic system and Donald Trump played by the rules. My understanding is that Donald Trump is not opposed to abortion; an act, it may be argued, which does incur blood on the hands.
Good thing President Macron apologized!
Paul,
Heritage 2025 has an agenda. Trump is central to the plan. In that sense I mentioned Roe vs Wade. Perhaps a better example would have been his inaction on January 6 as he watched the events unfold on the capitol steps and did nothing!! Blood was shed. People died. Or his lame and delayed response to two climate disaster hurricanes
where blood was shed and people died.
Sadly many people can’t understand the toll on human life his actions have and will cause. We all have choices in how we view Trump.
Your comment that he does not have blood on his hands frankly astonished me.
Great minds think alike! My favorite theologian, you, and my favorite satirist, Andy Borowitz, have both identified Trump as the current embodiment of the Antichrist archetype. Speaking truth to power, whether humorously or sacredly, is a divine calling. It made my day 🙏🤓
