Lech Wałęsa, Nobel Peace Prize winner, first democratically elected president of Poland and called “hero of Poland’s democracy,” sent a scathing letter to the President of the United States yesterday. It was signed by 38 other “former political prisoners of the communist regime serving Soviet Russia.” It was their response to the “horror” they felt watching Trump’s and J.D. Vance’s treatment of Ukraine President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office last Friday. I reprint most of the letter as Wałęsa posted it on Facebook, complete with his preface:

After the US decision to suspend supplies to Ukraine, if the answer was in my gesture it would be “Let’s do our part” not a step back. AMEN.
This is the text we signed:
Your Excellency Mr. President,
We watched the report of your conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski with fear and distaste. We consider your expectations to show respect and gratitude for the material help provided by the United States fighting Russia to Ukraine insulting. Gratitude is due to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed their blood in defense of the values of the free world. They have been dying on the frontline for more than 11 years in the name of these values and independence of their Homeland, which was attacked by Putin’s Russia.
We do not understand how the leader of a country that is the symbol of the free world cannot see it.
Our panic was also caused by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation reminded us of one we remember well from Security Service interrogations and from the debate rooms in Communist courts. Prosecutors and judges at the behest of the all-powerful communist political police also explained to us that they hold all the cards and we hold none. They demanded us to stop our business, arguing that thousands of innocent people suffer because of us. They deprived us of our freedoms and civil rights because we refused to cooperate with the government and our gratitude. We are shocked that Mr. President Volodymyr Zelenski was treated in the same way.
The history of the 20th century shows that every time the United States wanted to keep its distance from democratic values and its European allies, it ended up being a threat to themselves. This was understood by President Woodrow Wilson, who decided to join the United States in World War I in 1917. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt understood this, deciding after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 that the war for the defense of America would be fought not only in the Pacific, but also in Europe, in alliance with the countries attacked by the Third Reich.
We remember that without President Ronald Reagan and American financial commitment it would not have been possible to bring the collapse of the Soviet Union empire. President Reagan was aware that millions of enslaved people were suffering in Soviet Russia and the countries it conquered, including thousands of political prisoners who paid for their sacrifice in defense of democratic values with freedom. …He without hesitation called the USSR the “Empire of Evil” and gave it a decisive fight. We won, and the statue of President Ronald Reagan stands today in Warsaw vis à vis of the US embassy.
Mr. President, material aid – military and financial – cannot be equivalent to the blood shed in the name of independence and freedom of Ukraine, Europe, as well as the whole free world. Human life is priceless, its value cannot be measured with money. Gratitude is due to those who make the sacrifice of blood and freedom. It is obvious for us, the people of “Solidarity”, former political prisoners of the communist regime serving Soviet Russia.
[Signed]

Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election
Matthew Fox tells us that he had always shied away from using the term “Anti-Christ” because it was so often used to spread control and fear. However, given today’s rise of authoritarianism and forces of democracide, ecocide, and christofascism, he turns the tables in this book employing the archetype for the cause of justice, democracy, and a renewed Earth and humanity.
From the Foreword: If there was ever a time, a moment, for examining the archetype of the Antichrist, it is now…Read this book with an open mind. Good and evil are real forces in our world. ~~ Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Conversations with the Divine.

Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society
Visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them.
“A scholarly masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science. A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics

A Spirituality Named Compassion: Uniting Mystical Awareness with Social Justice
In A Spirituality Named Compassion, Matthew Fox delivers a profound exploration of the meaning and practice of compassion. Establishing a spirituality for the future that promises personal, social, and global healing, Fox marries mysticism with social justice, leading the way toward a gentler and more ecological spirituality and an acceptance of our interdependence which is the substratum of all compassionate activity.
“Well worth our deepest consideration…Puts compassion into its proper focus after centuries of neglect.” –The Catholic Register

Creation Spirituality: Liberating Gifts for the Peoples of the Earth
Fox’s spirituality weds the healing and liberation found in North American Creation Spirituality and in South American Liberation Theology. Creation Spirituality challenges readers of every religious and political persuasion to unite in a new vision through which we learn to honor the earth and the people who inhabit it as the gift of a good and just Creator.
“A watershed theological work that offers a common ground for religious seekers and activists of all stripes.” — Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice.
“I am reading Liberating Gifts for the People of the Earth by Matt Fox. He is one that fills my heart and mind for new life in spite of so much that is violent in our world.” ~ Sister Dorothy Stang.

The Hidden Spirituality of Men: Ten Metaphors to Awaken the Sacred Masculine
To awaken what Fox calls “the sacred masculine,” he unearths ten metaphors, or archetypes, ranging from the Green Man, an ancient pagan symbol of our fundamental relationship with nature, to the Spiritual Warrior….These timeless archetypes can inspire men to pursue their higher calling to connect to their deepest selves and to reinvent the world.
“Every man on this planet should read this book — not to mention every woman who wants to understand the struggles, often unconscious, that shape the men they know.” — Rabbi Michael Lerner, author of The Left Hand of God

One River, Many Wells: Wisdom Springing from Global Faiths
Matthew Fox calls on all the world traditions for their wisdom and their inspiration in a work that is far more than a list of theological position papers but a new way to pray—to meditate in a global spiritual context on the wisdom all our traditions share. Fox chooses 18 themes that are foundational to any spirituality and demonstrates how all the world spiritual traditions offer wisdom about each.“Reading One River, Many Wells is like entering the rich silence of a masterfully directed retreat. As you read this text, you reflect, you pray, you embrace Divinity. Truly no words can fully express my respect and awe for this magnificent contribution to contemporary spirituality.” –Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit

The ‘new world order’ will be the democratic, free world order. Ukraine is the impetus to get all of the free world, excluding the US, Russia, China and a few others, together to support Ukraine. A new template or blueprint will be drawn and expanded upon to keep democracy and the free trade of nations alive and by-pass the countries that do not cooperate and participate. We in Canada, for one, are fighting back against the political powers of the menacing giant to our south. And don’t think and believe that most other influential countries and Unions are not doing so as well. – BB.
For a refresher on Lech Walesa’s Solidarity movement, see Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny, Chapter 13: “Practice Corporeal Politics.”
I’m glad Lech Walesa and other Polish leaders wrote a very truthful and scathing letter to Trump since no one in his administration nor the sycophant cowardly Republican Congress ever confront him with the Truth nor our historical Democratic values. Many European leaders and people around the world are realizing the US is now under an unstable authoritarian/autocratic leader so they cannot depend on the US for democratic and humanitarian leadership any longer. Even many Americans are beginning to suffer and protest about many important governmental services and jobs being dismantled. Even his economic policies (tariff war with our neighbors Canada and Mexico) are being seriously questioned by economists, and the Wall Street Journal recently editorialized them as being “dumb.”
During the early years of Trump’s first administration, several prominent mental health experts such as psychiatrists and Ph.D. psychologists wrote a book (which didn’t receive enough public attention) being in professional agreement that Trump suffers from severe personality disorders.
Let Us Hope that more Americans wake up in time for the next midterm election and definitely by the next presidential election before Our Democracy is completely destroyed!
I am deeply thankful that Lech Walesa, a true 20th-Century hero, wrote the letter he did to Donald. I hope it will enlighten some people. I continue to stand amazed that most Republicans, not just MAGA true believers, still support the child currently occupying the Oval Office. It appears that even non-MAGA Republicans refuse to listen to anything but FOX entertainment talking heads, right-wing Christian nationalist preachers, and blasphemous podcasts. Their willful ignorance endangers their own children and grandchildren, stealing from them hope for the future and leading to mass depression among America’s youth.
