Many of us who watched or heard about the UN General Assembly of last week have focused on Trump’s and Netanyahu’s display of ugliness. Yes, it’s likely that never before words so cruel and inhumane were pronounced in that room, hallowed in the past by the remarks of some of the greatest human beings of the 20th century. I would like, however, to point you to some other speeches uttered in the same room, on those same days, which represent true signs of hope for the world.
Against the bullies of today, president of the EU Council Antonio Costa reiterated the importance of multilateralism: Multilateralism is not an ideal of the past. It is the only realistic way to address the problems of today. Alone, no country can prevent a pandemic, stabilize the climate, secure resilient supply chains, regulate Artificial Intelligence, ensure financial stability or deliver sustainable development. Alone, no country, however powerful, can build lasting peace.
The Secretary General of the U.N., Antonio Guterres, who is leaving the position soon, has reiterated the absolute need for a multipolar world as a response to the world crisis, characterized by a shift in power dynamics as power itself is concentrated in the hands of few technocrats and is even handed over to AI machines.
Guterres did not mince words. He said: The fault lines in our world are widening. Cracks have become canyons. Over the last decade, wars erupted with devastating consequences and dragged on with despicable cruelty. Civilians were targeted. Human rights trampled. Hunger weaponized. Humanitarians killed. International law cast aside. Geopolitical divides have deepened. Inequalities have intensified. Trust has frayed. The climate crisis went from distant warning to daily reality. And artificial intelligence moved at a speed that has blindsided even those who created it.
Very perceptively, Guterres continued: These are not separate crises. They are chapters of the same story. The story of power. Who has it. Who is denied it. How it is used. And how it is changing.
Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez was clear as day: I take the floor here with a single aim, and that is to defend what many are trying to destroy. With a charter of the UN in his hands, Sanchez explained on what the three flawed pillars on which the current attacks on the UN — which he called coordinated attempts at demolition — are based: selfishness, ignorance, and cruelty. These three definitions were very obviously meant for Trump and whoever tries to follow in its steps.
Sanchez offered examples of the utterly violent and destructive activites of Trump and his cronies. He continued, however, by saying: I have also seen wonderful things that keep me believing in humanity, such as activists putting their own lives at risk. Humanity is neither inherently good nor inherently bad. Humanity can be both. And every year, every day, in every crisis, humanity must decide how to act.
Brazilian president Inacio Lula da Silva also had some pearls such as: The U.N. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese cannot be silenced for telling the truth. On the Ukraine war, he said what to me is a sensible thing to say: We all know that there will be no winners on the battlefield. Diplomacy is the only option. On Venezuela: The Venezuelan people deserve to define their own destiny. He defined the U.S. blockage of Cuba as a collective and illegal punishment. He also defended science — against its corrupt use by a handful of oligarch technicians — and promised to continue to reduce deforestation in Brazil.
All of this to me sounds like Via Transformativa, that is, spirituality in action. I invite you to find these and some other speeches and watch and listen to them, as the passion of delivery is often at least half of the meaning of the speech itself. Observe the way in which these powerful men — and, unfortunately, very few women — take the podium and speak.
Let us also reflect on the fact that spiritual questions and yearning were interpreted in that U.N. room mostly by people who do not consider themselves “believers” while those two despicable politicians named at the beginning of this DM — whose proud public identity is “Christian” and “Jew” — continue to carry on the program of the devil.

Disarming the Tech and Wealth bombs as mentioned by Klein and Taylor offers a critical step in regaining balance on a cosmic scale. Being aware of histories, such as the many coincidences of the Doge (dogi) in Venice (697-1797) and the intent, actions of DOGE in government today, and takeovers of public spaces for private gain: Venice, Albania, etc. may encourage pause and reflection.
Thank you GG and DM team for recording the three speeches of Antonio Gutierrez, Pedro Sanchez, and Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva at the UN recently. They’re compassionate international leaders speaking Truth to power, greed, ignorance, and cruelty of a few world ‘leaders’ like Trump, and the need to reform the Security Council because they’re breaking the values and laws of the UN Charter by inflicting war, social injustice, and suffering on Humanity and Sacred Mother Earth/Her living creatures. The Spirit of the Divine Feminine of LOVE~Wisdom~Peace~Justice~Healing~Transformation~Strength~Creativity~Beauty~Joy~
Compassion~Loving Diverse Oneness… must continue to prevail in Our Hearts/Eternal Souls with one another, and with All Our Allies in All physical/nonphysical spiritual dimensions/Beings in Our evolving Humanity, Sacred Mother Earth, and Sacred Living Cosmos in the Sacred Process of the Eternal Present Moment….
Thankfully I have been able to watch most of the UNGA speeches on YouTube. It is a way of hearing update reports from countries around the world. My TIMES Atlas of World History has been an aid to view the location of each country. The first UN speech I viewed was by Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez. His conclusion promoting a woman to become future leader of the UN was inspiring. I was impressed by several prominent women Prime Ministers’ speeches, including Barbados. Seems like a promising and hopeful turning point during the current global inflection point. Thank you Matthew, Gianluigi and Team for giving fuller context to current events.
Honestly when I watch speeches like this, I think “oh great another politician with a word salad…” I appreciate their words, and their positive energy, but I don’t feel motivated or moved or inspired in any way. They are politicians after all.
What I want to see is the elimination of borders and the whole notion of nations. We are one people living on this earth and we are all equally valuable — every last one of us. Artificial borders serve to divide while what we need is unity. I would like to live in a world where the term “United Nations” is meaningless.
I’m not naive so I know borders aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but I’ll still hold that as my ideal. Without imagination first, nothing would ever be created. A world without borders is where we are going — I’m sure of it. Even it takes hundreds of years to get there, and likely several large wars.
Here’s a really out there thesis: what if Trump, Netanyahu, the Oligarchs, etc… are really GOOD for the planet in the long run because they are so despicable they are uniting the rest of the world! So the net gain ends up being more unity. Hmm. I’ve been seeing some news reports that the war in Iran is causing much higher adoption of alternative energies.
Sometimes the forest has to burn down for the new growth to thrive.
In sympathy with Mark, the last I heard coming out of Spain was thousands of people coming out to demonstrate about the cost and shortage of housing, prompted by the ousting of an 87-year old woman from the home she had lived in for decades; while the Madrid regional government has purchased a multi-million euro penthouse for its own use. Words like “selfishness, ignorance, and cruelty”, as quoted above by Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez at the UN, come to mind.
Meanwhile, Trump and Netanyahu can at least be voted out of office. It’s the totalitarian governments that we need to fear.
Thank you for the voices offering “Signs of Hope.”
I listened to Antonio Gutierrez’ speech and found it reassuring and intelligent after hearing the evil speeches of the two warmongers.
