More Telling of Truth to Power by Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor

Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor, in their prophetic book, End Times Fascism and The Fight For the Living World, are waking us all up to the very high stakes in the game that AI, Silicon Valley, and the rich billionaires it spawned, are playing with humanity, the Earth ,and all her creatures.

I write about the Antichrist MAGA movement in our time, and they  write about the Anticreation movement in our time. Nor are they alone. Dan Milmo, global technology editor of The Guardian, writes about how Anthropic is warning investors for their upcoming IPO prospectus that advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”*

In their potential $2 trillion flotation, the company calls for a slowdown in the rapid development of technology. While companies frequently warn of risks and safety issues when going public, this is unique: An admission that their product could cause human extinction. Jacob Coxon, an Anthropic researcher resigned this month warning that people building AI “earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Anthropic’s chief executive called for the industry as a whole “to slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”

In the Conclusion chapter of their book, Klein and Taylor talk about “Done with Do-Gooding.” We were told that “visionary businessmen would create such incredible prosperity that everyone would benefit” and they would fix things “with their philanthropy.” But the era in which billionaires bragged about their do-gooding is over and never returning. This is especially true for Silicon Valley, which no longer feigns concern about the spread of dangerous lies, platforming Nazis, or fomenting real-world violence. They have achieved a monopoly of market dominance and are fighting users, workers, and governments attempting to regulate or tax them. They are also buying up the media and sources of information, SCOTUS judges, and politicians.

The wealth of some CEOs and venture capitalists is “staggering” with “the top fortunes growing by $100 million a day.” The result? Believing again in “fascist myths of their supposed inherent genetic superiority.” For them, “power isn’t for impressing the meek. It’s for imposing your will on the world.” Which includes spreading conspiracies, courting climate chaos and risking the global economy.

The authors call for “Disarming the Tech Bomb.” Since “AI is a human creation, [it] can and must be subject to regulation and oversight….That’s what the majority of people want.”—witness the growing movement against data centers.

They call for “Disarming the Wealth Bomb.” Insisting that “there is such a thing as enough,” they call for a universal maximum income or a wealth cap. Whether the upper limit be a $10 million or $100 million, either sum is “far more than is required to live an opulent life.” (It is telling that one of the “beasts” of the antichrist that Hildegard paints is that of “luxury living.”)  

“The desperate lengths to which the ultra-rich will go to evade any effort at basic fairness only underscores why a wealth cap is needed.”If billionaires seek to flee states or country posing a modest tax, “Why bother fiddling with half-measures instead of going for real solutions?”

We have learned that most of these billionaires are “profoundly disloyal. To cities. To states. To nations. To our species. To our shared planet.” Their supreme power seduces them into believing they are “supremely entitled.”

Warning that fascism “is always a warped response to real crises,” the authors propose many ways in which people seeking some fairness and justice can band together and demonstrate how “greed need not be the engine of civilization and how growth cannot go on forever.” We can “break with capitalism and build new economic and political systems that honor life and prioritize care and repair.”**
