Week of 9/16-21/2024: Hildegard, Matthew’s Mother & Brother, & the Anti-Christ

September 16, 2024: “Anti-Christ” as an Archetype Appropriate to our Apocalyptic Times
Over the course of the past nine years the media as it struggles to report on the phenomenon of trumpism often employs the world “unprecedented.” His lies, his crimes, his influence of the highest court of our land, the insurrection… all of it is unprecedented. Matthew proposes that a better term to describe him might be evil. Or antichrist. “Antichrist” is not just an archetype representing the opposite of everything Christ was and is, it is a term specifically used in the book of Revelation (also known as the Book of the Apocalypse). Artists including Hildegard of Bingen and Luca Signorelli have painted compelling images of the Antichrist. And, on the morning of the debate, Thom Hartmann published an article entitled “Will Donald Trump Reveal Himself Tonight as the Antichrist?“ A week later, he interviewed Matthew on the topic of the Antichrist.

The day after Trump’s inauguration, people were already punning on how “unprecedented” his regime would be. Photo from the Women’s March in Chicago by bradhoc, January 21, 2017. Wikimedia Commons.

September 17, 2024: A Healing Dream for a Time of Apocalypse Like Ours
Because of the unprecedented times we are currently living in, Matthew found himself picking up his book The Coming of the Cosmic Christ. In it he shares a powerful dream he had in which he was told his mother was dying. As his mother’s health was quite fine at the time, Matthew realized that the dream was referring to his Mother, the Earth. This is why Matthew’s most recent book on the Anti-Christ is dedicated to those who are committed to saving our Mother. Yes, our mother is dying—but she is not yet dead.  To be dying is not to be dead.  And we can be part of the resurrection and turn apocalypse to revelation if we are willing to do the work, inner and outer, that is being asked of us today and move beyond denial of the suffering of Mother Earth.

September 18, 2024: Hildegard of Bingen’s Feast Day 2024
September 17th is Hildegard’s Feast Day. She has so much to teach us all, that Matthew wrote three books about her. Hildegard was a musician, a poet, a painter, a visionary, and one unafraid to speak with authority to those in power. In one vision, a young woman named Love instructed her that love “was the source of this creation in the beginning when God said: ‘Let it be!’  And it was.”  Indeed, “the whole creation was formed through love.” Love was the first. She made everything…Love was in eternity and brought forth, in the beginning of all holiness, all creatures without any admixture of evil. Adam and Eve, as well were produced by love from the pure nature of the Earth. Hildegard is mentioned often in Matthew’s new book because she painted powerful paintings of both Christ and the Antichrist. Hildegard celebrates the Divine Feminine: Mary is “Mother of all joy, ground of all being, a glowing, most green, verdant sprout.”

September 19, 2024: Remembering My Mother and Brother Nat
Matthew shares some memories of his mother and also his recently deceased brother, Nat. Matthew’s mother was ahead of her time. Though she had many children, she was determined to have balance in her life and set aside two hours for herself everyday. She would read, swim, bicycle, meet with a friend, etc. She was an avid reader, and even though she lost one eye in a car accident, she read until the day she died. Her friends were also important to her. She belonged to a book club, sewing club, bridge club, etc. And she had friends from diverse backgrounds. It was also her idea to rent out a room in their house to a local foreign grad student, thus giving her family an opportunity to learn that the world is rich and varied. Regarding Nat, he was a brilliant engineer with 80 patents to his credit. His primary professor was very proud of him and said that Nat was his very best student because “he really did invent something.”

September 20, 2024: Formal Launching of New Book: Trump & MAGA as Antichrist
On this day, a formal press release appeared announcing Matthew’s most recent book, Trump & the MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election. This is Matthew’s third book on the subject of evil. After viewing the captivating fresco of the Antichrist in Orvieto, Italy this summer, Matthew felt compelled to write this book. And obviously there was a deadline as this critically important election looms. In addition, the lies continue, this time impacting an entire city and all its citizens, as both the First Felon and his wingman tell inflammatory lies about the Haitian immigrant community. Lies fan the flames of fear and racism and ultimately breed chaos. Telling lies is one of many traits of the Antichrist. Let’s make sure he doesn’t return to the White House.

Progressive talk show host Thom Hartmann interviews Matthew Fox on Trump and the MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ. Listen HERE.

September 21, 2024: Questions Posed about My New Book on Trump, MAGA, Antichrist
Matthew addresses three questions about his book. 1) Why is the first chapter about Sigmund Freud? Freud was greatly impacted by the same fresco in Orvieto that Matthew was. An entire book was written about the impact that fresco had on him. The book, Freud’s Trip to Orvieto was written by Nicholas Fox Weber, an art historian. 2) I hear that you are redefining MAGA in this book. Yes, the vision of MAGA and the movement’s mastermind may be less about making America great again. and more about making America grotesque again. More lies, more racism, more corruption, more christofascism. 3) What do you mean when you say the opposite of evil is not the good but the Sacred? This means that we cannot have a conversation on evil until we have a conversation on the Sacred. If we are out of touch with the Sacred, we are necessarily out of touch with how to deal with evil.

Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election

Matthew Fox tells us that he had always shied away from using the term “Anti-Christ” because it was so often used to spread control and fear. However, given today’s rise of authoritarianism and forces of democracide, ecocide, and christofascism, he turns the tables in this book employing the archetype for the cause of justice, democracy, and a renewed Earth and humanity.
From the Foreword: If there was ever a time, a moment, for examining the archetype of the Antichrist, it is now…Read this book with an open mind. Good and evil are real forces in our world. ~~ Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Conversations with the Divine.

Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society

Visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them.
“A scholarly masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science.  A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics

The Coming of the Cosmic Christ: The Healing of Mother Earth and the Birth of a Global Renaissance

In what may be considered the most comprehensive outline of the Christian paradigm shift of our Age, Matthew Fox eloquently foreshadows the manner in which the spirit of Christ resurrects in terms of the return to an earth-based mysticism, the expression of creativity, mystical sexuality, the respect due the young, the rebirth of effective forms of worship—all of these mirroring the ongoing blessings of Mother Earth and the recovery of Eros, the feminine aspect of the Divine.
“The eighth wonder of the world…convincing proof that our Western religious tradition does indeed have the depth of imagination to reinvent its faith.” — Brian Swimme, author of The Universe Story and Journey of the Universe.
“This book is a classic.” Thomas Berry, author of The Great Work and The Dream of the Earth.

Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen

An introduction to the life and work of Hildegard of Bingen, Illuminations reveals the life and teachings of one of the greatest female artists and intellectuals of the Western Mystical Tradition.  At the age of 42, she began to have visions; these were captured as 36 illuminations–24 of which are recorded in this book along with her commentaries on them.
“If one person deserves credit for the great Hildegard renaissance in our time, it is Matthew Fox.”  – Dr Mary Ford-Grabowsky, author of Sacred Voices.

1 thought on “Week of 9/16-21/2024: Hildegard, Matthew’s Mother & Brother, & the Anti-Christ”

  1. Thank you for another thought provoking week of meditations. I do hesitate to call the one who lost the last election evil per se, but I do believe that his behavior and the “movement” he has built are evil. Those who have funded his hatred are just as responsible, if not more so, because I believe in many ways he is just a figurehead representing every evil -ism that exists. Even though it is almost impossible to see, I think that he and they are made in the image of God and are loved by God, as we all are.
